Jack Sheridan RIP

breaffy gaa jack sheridan ripThe passing of Jack Sheridan last July robbed our club of its Father figure. Jack from Ballyshane, Breaffy, was Club President at the time of his death and his involvement with the club since the 1950s was constant.
A fine footballer Jack was one of the key players on the Breaffy side which made a huge breakthrough to win the Mayo Junior Football Championship in 1966, the clubs first county championship. In 1959 Jack captioned De La Salle, a Breaffy/Castlebar Mitchells combination, to a county minor title, scoring 1-4 of the team’s 2-6 from his midfield berth. He represented Mayo at Minor and Junior levels and was one of the stars of the Mayo Junior team which reached the 1967 All-Ireland Final, losing to Kerry.
Jack played for Breaffy in four decades, last lining out against Kilmeena in March 1987, just shy of his 45th birthday. His contribution to the club off the field of play was well underway at that stage. He was on the club executive in 1959, was club secretary in the 1960s and to the modern generation he will be remembered as the pitch manager in Breaffy, a role to which his commitment was fanatical. The hours and care he put into maintaining the pitch to a very high standard are impossible to quantify.
Jack was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame in 1995 and was inducted into the Green and Red Trust Hall of Fame in 2006. The respect in which he was held by all involved with Breaffy was total.
Jack Sheridan was the epitome of what makes the GAA great, that selfless work, far from any limelight, all for the love and pride of his native place. A great Gael who is sadly missed. Rest in peace.

The league campaign was very successful for the Breaffy U16 team winning 7 of their 8 league games. Breaffy had a comfortable victory over Kilmeena in the semi-final on a score line of 6-9 to 1-5. The final was played in Knockmore where they faced the only team that had defeated them in the league campaign – Ardnaree. Breaffy worked extremely hard for each other and played with what only can be described as a great team sprit to emerge victorious on a score line of 0-10 to 0-07. Well done lads.
